A Literal Translation of the Lyrics of the International in Filipino

The International is the worldwide anthem of the struggle of the world's oppressed peoples toward liberation from the clutches of the ruling class. It was inspired by the creation of the short-lived Paris commune in 1871 when the working class for the first time assumed political power during the Industrial Revolution. The song exhorts all oppressed peoples of the world to rise in protest and take matters into their own hands because nobody but themselves will take care of their present and future. It has become the rallying song of all people who are protesting and clamoring for a better life.

The International's melody was created by Pierre Degeyter and the lyrics was written by Eugene Pottier. This is a literal translation in Filipino of the lyrics of the International based on the English version of the original words in French. Everyone should learn how to sing the International in their own language. The song is usually sung with a raised clenched right fist.

Masang alipin, bangon, bangon

There are a few known Tagalog versions of the lyrics of the International when sung in Filipino. However, they are not strictly literal translations of the original lyrics but adaptations to the peculiar situation of the oppressed people of the Philippines. The adaptations call on the people to rise against local oppression and foreign intervention in local affairs. The different versions have been used in the Filipino people's struggle against oppression during the protest years that span from the 1950s to the 1970s.
